Travel report Zambezi region

Kazungula_RainWay to Namap

As announced, Zambesi Health, represented by its board members, has started project work on the ground in Zambia and Namibia. Between 01.03. and 13.03.2017 we were on the road in the Zambesi region. Together with Athens, the vet in Kazungula, we worked our way through flooded roads to the remote villages and their herds of cattle, no problem for our four-wheel drive 25-year-old Landcriuser.

The livestock owners were prepared for the visit and had already driven their herds into the “Crow” of thorny branches. The adolescent boys were responsible for catching and putting down the cattle to be treated. We then moved on to the goats, which are housed in high stables during the rainy season because standing on damp or wet ground causes hoof diseases. Finally, all the dogs were vaccinated against rabies and dewormed on the village square in full view of almost all the villagers.

We were able to purchase and provide the necessary veterinary medicines in Livingstone. As a thank you, we were able to attend the presentations and demonstrations on the occasion of International Women’s Day as guests of honor.

In Namibia, we visited a facility in Mafuta that looks after around 100 orphans, teaches the small pre-school children and provides the older ones with food during the school break. Ad hoc we have provided all hygiene articles soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, Vaseline, curd soap. There are no toilets on the site. Zambesi Health will check whether the construction of a toilet block can be financed.

The hygiene training for teachers was another attempt to find out exactly what knowledge is available in this field. The tapeworm cycle must be understood if children are to be taught to wash their hands with soap, which must also be available.

We met with open ears everywhere, whether it was about herd management, pasteurization of raw milk or transmission routes of zoonoses. Our approach is welcomed and accepted. This motivates us to intensify the projects and further develop the training material for children and their teachers.

To this end, we ask for your generous support. We are grateful for every gift, no matter how small. We look forward to every new supporting member, you can find the application form on the homepage.
