Flyers and vaccinations

In March 2023, the local Zambezi Health Zambia NGO carried out a major project to combat an outbreak of anthrax in the Zambezi region.

The main aim of this project was to educate farmers about the dangers of anthrax, particularly in relation to the consumption of infected meat from dead cattle.

Information flyer

To ensure effective education, flyers were produced in the relevant local languages and informative short reports on anthrax were also distributed via specially produced radio podcasts on local radio.

Creation of educational material in flyer form:

In close cooperation with experts from the fields of medicine and animal health, flyers were developed to inform farmers about the dangers of anthrax. The flyers were written in the local languages of the region to ensure that the information was easy to understand for the target group. They contained clear instructions on the identification of infected meat and the safe handling of animal carcasses.

Radio podcasts

In order to reach a wide audience, radio podcasts were produced containing short informative reports about Anthrax. These podcasts were broadcast on local radio stations to educate the public about the risks of anthrax. By using local languages, the messages were communicated effectively and a better understanding was achieved.

Training and sensitization of farmers

The local Zambesi Health Zambia NGO organized training and awareness-raising events for farmers in the region. The symptoms and transmission routes of anthrax were explained and measures for prevention and handling infected meat were taught. The farmers received practical instructions on how to dispose of animal carcasses safely and were informed about the importance of reporting suspected cases in good time.

Cooperation with local authorities and veterinarians

The local Zambesi Health Zambia NGO worked closely with the local authorities and veterinarians to effectively combat the anthrax outbreak. Joint strategies have been developed to monitor the animal population, identify suspicious cases and ensure the implementation of necessary measures such as the safe disposal of animal carcasses and the implementation of protective vaccinations.

Conclusion

The anthrax control project of the local Zambesi Health Zambia NGO in the Zambezi region was an important step towards raising awareness and preventing anthrax. By producing flyers in local languages and disseminating information via radio podcasts, we were able to effectively inform and raise awareness among farmers. The training and cooperation with local authorities and veterinarians helped to contain the outbreak and protect human and animal health. This project demonstrated the importance of coordinated action and collaboration between different actors in the successful fight against anthrax in the region.
